I have windows vista, and I can't download books - it shows the error:
Error opening\creating HOSTS file
In windows explorer, right-click on the file: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. and click Properties > Security tab > Edit Permissions Change "Users" to all rights by checking all the boxes.
My Microsoft Word documents are not converting properly - what's up?
GEB eBook Librarian requires Microsoft word 2000 or greater to convert MS-Word documents.
When the Librarian comes up, it gives me an error message:
Error occurred while initializing listening socket, eBook connection failed. (is a web server running on this computer?
To help diagnose this problem, download this utility and it will tell you what application - if any - has port 80 open. (v1.2 build 369 and later have this feature built in so this utility is not required)
Double check to make sure Microsoft Internet Information Server or other web server software is not running on your computer while the eBook Librarian is running. Some Spy-Ware removal tools (Ad Subtract, etc) can also take over Port 80 on your computer -- shutting down these applications while running the librarian should solve this type of problem.
For Windows XP SP2 users: please be sure if you have Windows Firewall running that you have enabled the GEBLibrarian.exe application to open ports on your computer.
When I connect to the Librarian application with my eBookwise 1150, I get a message on my device that says:
"Although there areeBooks on your eBookwise Librarian bookshelf [blah blah], they are not suitable for this device"
This is typically caused by attempting to connect to your PC using a Proxy configuration on your EBW1150 device. You do not need to configure your device to use a proxy, please disable the proxy and try again. Check out the news section for info regarding the latest ETI driver for your device.
I can download your sample eBooks to my device, but when I try to open them I get the error message:
This book cannot be read on this eBook. Please remove it and check out another copy from your library.
The firmware in your eBook may need to be upgraded to the latest version (v3.3 for GEB 2150, REB 1200, and REB 1150 models and V2.0.305 for the REB 1100) to allow your eBook device to view unencrypted content. Once you have connected to the Gemstar servers (via telephone or other means) and upgraded your device, download a copy of the "eBook User's Guide" from the Online Bookshelf to make this new setting stick.
I see that eBookwise.com has a new application called the eBookwise Librarian! What is this?
The eBookwise Librarian is actually a rebranded version of the GEB eBook Librarian that is being sold under an OEM distribution agreement with the good folks at eBookwise.com. Other than cosmetic differences, the two versions are (and will remain in the foreseeable future) identical functionally.
What text encodings can be rendered by the ebookwise-1150?
Special thanks to the folks at ETI for publishing this handy chart! Click here for a special character chart for 1150 device rendering. (This was posted in response to an inquiry which resulted in a returned email)
